Having a Happy Christmas as a Contractor
As a self-employed contractor it can be difficult to fully switch off, leave the building site behind and enjoy time at home over Christmas.
By making a few plans in early December, you could enjoy a long Christmas break without the worry.
Have a job planned for next year
If your most recent contract has finished up just before Christmas, don’t wait until the new year to find your next job. Try and source your next contract before you start your Christmas holiday, this will ease your mind and let you enjoy the Christmas period without wondering when your next job will be!
Get an early tax rebate
Unless you’ve been saving throughout the year, Christmas can take a big chunk out of your pay come November/December. If you’re a CIS worker, however, you don’t need to worry as you could get an Early Tax Rebate of up to 60% of your yearly tax refund before Christmas. For the average UK construction worker, this would be enough to cover a magical Christmas and take away any New Year money worries! For more information, visit our early tax rebate page.
Enjoy the time off
The best way to have a happy Christmas as a contractor is to simply enjoy the time off. We know how tempting being lured away from home by increased day rates and over time can be, but it’s important to give yourself a break. Christmas week is the ideal time to get some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Whether you’re spending your time watching Christmas films, at the pub with your mates or spending time with family you haven’t seen for ages – enjoy your time off.
And if you really must work
Rather than doing a shift at the building site, why not nurture your career from home? Networking on social media, checking you have all the insurance you need, updating your website (if you have one) or looking at whether going limited could make you financially better off are all positive steps for your construction career.
